INCISENT Technologies: History

INCISENT Technologies was founded in 2001 by Pat Ryan Jr. and Dave Jacobs, partners in private equity group Ryan Enterprises. While working together at Ryan Enterprises, Ryan and Jacobs were keenly focused on using innovative practices to transform businesses in the manufacturing and consumer arenas including various aspects of the automotive industry.

Their motivation was propelled by three factors:

  1. Automotive retail remained driven by "gut-based" decisions and was an industry that had yet to incorporate the type of sophisticated data driven decision making that had revolutionized other industries and was behind the breakaway success of Wal-Mart.
  2. The industry was overdue for change—in need of innovative technologies to bring the efficiencies and transformation found in other industries.
  3. The industry was entering the Internet Age without a consumer-centric approach and was facing an eventual technology driven realignment to become consumer driven.

Out of this vision, INCISENT Technologies was born. Using an original business model that sought to capitalize on the software's ability to catalyze wholesale transactions, INCISENT's FirstLook Solutions launched its first event, leveraging a combined live-virtual approach, with over $1 million in transactions. The roll out of FirstLook was slated in suburban Washington, D.C. for 10:00 a.m. on September 11, 2001.

The deep automotive recession that came in the wake of the tragedy of 9/11 forced INCISENT to step back, innovate and evolve its products and business model throughout the downturn. The INCISENT team's persistence and hard work resulted in the innovative products that led to the record-breaking growth recognized by Inc. Magazine when it ranked INCISENT as the #4 Fastest-Growing Software Company in the U.S. in its 2008 Inc. 500 Rankings.
